On the 10th of June, Father’s day, I wrote the blog post “The Three Things I want to teach our kids“. Click the link below if you missed it !
One of the 7 core values that I describe and that are critical in a career going forward are creativity and imagination. So it is important to stimulate imagination and creativity. Having the ability to dream and imagine opens up their potential. That’s why we decided as parents to support our kids idea to start a vlog. They watch vlogs of other people every day and hardly watch TV anymore…
My Financial Investment in our Kids Adventure
Several years I did invest in a professional lens camera. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 is a digital mirrorless interchangeable lens camera adhering to the Olympus and Panasonic developed Micro Four Thirds System(MFT) system design standard. Panasonic classified the GH1 as a hybrid stills/video camera and the GH1 was introduced and marketed as higher end camera than Panasonic’s first MFT camera, the stills only, non-video capable Lumix DMC-G1.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 was the second MFT camera introduced under the MFT design standard and the first MFT camera to include HD video recording capability. As part of the marketing of this camera, Panasonic sponsored some professional filmmakers by allowing them to borrow the GH1 camera for their projects. One such GH1 model camera was used to film the pilot of the Swedish horror film Marianne.
So the camera the kids can use as I hardly use it myself. We did list out the material missing to start a VLOG video studio. Here’s the material I invested in…so the kids can create qualitative videos.
1. Bresser BR-2245 Daylight set 1800W
The Bresser BR-2245 Daylight Set is a way to expand your studio easily and quickly and ideal for portrait photography and product photography. The set contains two lamp holders for four lamps, two 50x70cm softboxes, two lamp stands, eight daylight spiral lights and a carrying bag. The four lamps in the lamp holder can be switched on and off per pair, allowing you to create the desired amount of light yourself. With the two soft boxes you can also soften the light even further. The maximum light output of the Bresser BR-2245 Daylight Set is 1800 watts, with which you can also capture large subjects or a group of people. The color temperature of this set is 5500 Kelvin and therefore equal to daylight.
2. Rode VideoMic Rycote · Microphone
The RODE VideoMic is a professional grade shotgun microphone. Based on the latest ‘Film industry’ technology, the VideoMic is designed specifically for use with high-quality Digital Video Cameras.
The VideoMic exhibits low noise and an unusually wide 40Hz-20kHz bandwidth for its size. It is ultra lightweight, yet rugged due to ABS construction. The VideoMic is powered by a standard 9 Volt battery and offers a Low Battery LED status indicator and a switchable high pass filter to reduce unwanted low frequency rumble.
The VideoMic attaches to any Camcorder that has the standard hot-shoe fitting and utilizes a stereo mini jack for audio output. With this device the sound can be recorded in a qualitative manner.
3. BRESSER BR-BGS1 Background System 3x4M
This Background system consists of two strong and stable aluminium light stands which can be folded up easily to compact dimensions. Upon these stands comes a two-parts telescopic crossbar with an adjustable width of 162 cm to 300 cm. Over this crossbar you can hang a background cloth, vinyl or a paper roll. In order to reduce reflections the aluminium is provided with a black powder coating. A simple and very functional background system that can be used universally and with the included bag it can also be transported easily. The cotton cloths are of a thick quality, washable and colourfast.
The total financial investment for the vlog studio additions came to a total of 375 Euro.
Defining the Rules of the Vlog
Anyone can join YouTube and begin uploading videos, starting a new channel that’s successful and gains a steady viewership is easier said than done. Starting a new YouTube channel isn’t simple and as responsible parents we defined some rules or tips to put our kids on the right path to YouTube success!
1. Maintain a Positive Attitude and Always Be Respectful
Viewers and subscribers worldwide want a “feel good” story. Negativity can be a good source for humor, context, or comparison, but we want them to focus on the positive and always be respectful. We want to avoid constant rants and complaints and instead, as the old adage goes, “look on the bright side”.
2. Be Passionate About The Vlog Topics They Discuss
We discussed before the start that they should not start up a YouTube channel simply because they think that it may benefit monetarily. There are a whole lot of topics out there that can earn you money, but if you don’t feel passionate about it, the viewers will see through the videos and see that they are not as passionate.
There’s a high chance they quickly lose motivation to consistently create quality content and become bored of the topics.
3. Let’s Make Your YouTube Channel Stand Out
We want them to be different. Be unique and original. We want them to come up with a great idea and stick with it. We want them to make it something that reflects our loving family. There are many great ideas and we will see where this adventure takes us
Final Words
As parents we realize that the YouTube life will not be easy. It’s important to recognize that being really successful on YouTube isn’t easy. There will be setbacks. There will be failures. We can help our kids to build resilience. They hope to create a popular channel on YouTube so they will need to be patient, persistent, and positive, and they need to keep their mind open to constantly learning. We can help them in this adventure.
If they are able to see every single mistake, both small and large, as an educational experience, then they can become a great YouTuber. So are you interested to visit their VLOG, then go immediately to the YouTube channel “5 Point 5 Miles”.
Kids have already created two cool videos and you need to watch both of them ! Subscribe and stay tuned on their creative adventures. Thanks for reading this blog post. Don’t hesitate to leave your comments and feedback. Let us know what you think. Thanks for following us on Twitter and Facebook and reading this blog post. As always we end with a quote.
